Lawrence, located at the crossroads of river Wakarusa and river Kansas, has a distinct political, economic and cultural history. Named after Amos Adams Lawrence, a leading protagonist of the anti-slavery movement, Lawrence is the hub of politics that is unique and self-styled, as is the city. This is evident in the fact that while Kansas is predominantly Republican, Lawrence has a leaning towards the Democratic. In fact it is one of the few cities that recognizes same sex marriages and even provides them with legal services. The openness and hospitality of the city is reflected in its people.

The city is known for its education system. The University of Kansas, and its much acclaimed sports team Kansas Jayhawks, hold a place of pride among its people. For the average tourist, Lawrence, Kansas offers many activities such as art, theater, museums, riverside restaurants, adventure sports and river trails. The main mode of transport in city of Lawrence is the road system, with the bus service known as the Lawrence Transit System. It is more commonly known as the 'T' route. Tourists get a fair mix of hotels and restaurants to choose from, with tourism being one of their major industries in this river city. Camping, riding, fishing, swimming in the Clinton Lake, is one of the major tourist attractions and a hot favorite with the locals.
