Kansas Overview

Welcome to Kansas. The State of Kansas is a Midwestern state in the United States of America’s central region. Let’s go for a Kansas overview. This central region of U.S. is often referred to as the American “Heartland”. The State of Kansas got its name from the Kansas River that flows through it (the river was named “Cansez” in French by explorer Étienne de Veniard, Sieur de Bourgmont), and after the name of the Kansa tribe who dwelt in the present-day Kansas area.

The name of the tribe is mostly said to imply “people of the wind” or more appropriately, “people of the south wind”, even though this was probably not the original meaning of the term. Residents of Kansas are known throughout the world as Kansans.

According to the Kansas history, this area has been home to several nomadic Native Americans who used to hunt bison. In 1850, the first settlement in Kansas by the European Americans took place, amidst the political wars on the issue of slavery. In 1854, after the officially declared settlement by the U.S. government, abolitionists from New England and pro-slavery settlers from adjacent state of Missouri rushed to Kansas Territory for deciding whether Kansas would become a free state or a slave state.

Thus, Kansas became a hotbed of violence and chaos as these forces fought against each other and Kansas came to be known as Bleeding Kansas. The abolitionists eventually persisted and Kansas became a free state to enter the Union on January 29, 1861. Regarding Kansas agriculture, the state is one of the most productive states that yield several crops, with sunflower and wheat production as the leading one.
